Finding My Style // Fashion

LAF Lines // Finding My Style // Fashion // How to create a formula that works to express your fashion sense!

As with all things in my life, my fashion sense is still a work in progress. Similar to my method for honing my home decor style, I find myself scrolling Pinterest more often than not, to find inspiration in the styling and outfits that other folks are wearing.

I love the look of the boho fashion trend. I also like some rocker vibes sprinkled in. Both on the scaled back side though. My life (and my personality) doesn’t lend itself to anything over the top. I really want that carefree life, style, personality… but let’s be honest, I’m anything but carefree. So trying to fake it ’til I make it!

Boho Business Casual

I primarily search Pinterest for “boho business casual” because I’m always on the hunt for work outfit inspiration. Outfits that have some personality and that easy, cute look and vibe I’m going for. My results usually end up skewed more toward the boho and less toward the business casual, and often times aren’t what I would consider appropriate for my workplace.

So I’m always striving to find inspiration that has the right balance of boho and business casual. Oh, and COMFORT! And ease of wear! Because I find it very difficult to be productive if I’m all wrapped up in the trappings of a complicated outfit. Comfort first, and then cuteness. And the same goes for non-work outfits, just less business and more casual!

A Style Formula

I have a note pinned in my Notes app with an outline of my “Bohemian Rock” style goals. It includes the types of clothing pieces I want to wear, accessories, details, patterns, colors, etc. It goes something like this:

  • Rock/Slogan Tees
  • Unique Blazers
  • Kimonos
  • Cardigans
  • Skinny Jeans/Pants
  • Boot Cut/Flare Jeans
  • Maxi Skirts
  • Pencil Skirts
  • Short/mid-length Dresses
  • Leather/Denim Jackets

SHOES

  • Boots/Booties
  • Slip On Sneakers
  • Clogs
  • Espadrilles
  • Birkenstock-esque Sandals

ACCESSORIES

  • Scarves/Hats
  • Lotsa Rings
  • Short Painted Nails

COLORS

  • Teal
  • Purple
  • Pink
  • Yellow
  • Navy

PATTERNS

  • Floral
  • Stripes
  • Ikat
  • Aztec
  • Dots

DETAILS

  • Distressing
  • Lace
  • Crochet
  • Fringe
  • Embroidery

Of course, this is not the end all, be all. To be honest, I have a lot of things in my closet that don’t meet these criteria, and that I don’t wear. Or don’t want to wear. I need to edit BIG TIME!

In addition to these pieces, colors, patterns, details that I’d like to have in my clothing arsenal, I have a list of outfit formulas that I reference when I’m looking for inspiration:

  • Skinnies w/ Loose Tops/Sweaters
  • Flares w/ Fitted Tops & Loose Cardis
  • Maxi Skirts w/ Fitted Tops & Crop Jackets/Cardis
  • Pencil Skirts w/ Flowy Tops
  • Short Dresses w/ Cardis & Ankle Boots
  • Shorts w/ Loose Tees/Flowy Tops
  • Shorts w/ Fitted Tops & Cardis/Jackets

I try to plan my outfits for the work week on Sunday. It makes getting ready in the morning SO much simpler. I don’t want to feel like I’m wearing a uniform, so I try to mix up the outfit formula and the colors so I have a different look, but a similar vibe, from day to day. Planning the entire week let’s me see if I’m repeating any one thing too often.

As I said, my fashion sense is definitely still a work in progress! But I enjoy the process and LOVE when I get an outfit just right.

Boho + Casual + COMFORT = A Happy Dance 🙂

What is your fashion inspiration? What’s your perfect outfit?

Many thanks and much love,
laf
