Have you ever watched an HGTV show, a YouTube video or an Instagram story of an interior designer/home decorator who stops by their warehouse full of furniture and decor, pulls something from their stash, and just swaps it out in their home on a whim? Well—I have seen it plenty of times, but much to my chagrin, that’s not me! Though I did kinda pull off something similar earlier this year…
First, let’s flash back to my original living room/study reveal HERE, to the OG setup (there have been many versions of this space since that post in 2018, like THIS redesign I documented on the blog in 2019, as well as other variations since then, while I was offline and unfortunately not documenting the updates here).
The desk in the image above, that used to sit behind my couch, had most recently been taking up residence in my office at my day job. It was basically serving as a drop/dump zone, and I wanted it back at the house to use as an artist table, because I had new plans for how to use this space!
For this remix, I brought the easel back to the corner near the sliding doors, I relocated my art cart last seen in my office/studio, and hid some supplies in plain sight amidst the books and other decor on the bookcases. I floated the desk, set up my drafting board, and got an adjustable chair (the only purchase made for this update) that can be used at desk height or at the easel when I’m working on a painting and tired of standing.
And now for the reveal! Here’s how the study-turned-art-space looks now (you might notice some other rearranging too—more details and reveals coming soon)!
I’m really happy with this remix! One of my long term goals is to bring art-making back into my life more regularly, and I feel like this space will facilitate that. I still needed a place to house my book collection, so this one-time devoted study is now doing double duty.
What’s your favorite multi-functional space in your home?
