Halloween Decor Roundup + Creative Costumes Ideas

If I’m being honest here (and I always am), I’ve never really decorated for Halloween. Not in my own house anyway.

My mom would decorate my childhood home back in the day, when she would hand out candy while my dad took me and my friends trick or treating. But that was mostly paper pumpkins and skeletons taped to the windows and doors. Nothing super fancy.

I was more into creating unique, and sometimes quite elaborate, costumes. I say was because I’ve retired from getting dressed up in the past year or so (unless you count a jack-o-lantern or skeleton t-shirt, or some cat ears and some minor makeup), but I really used to go wild with it. Check out the gallery at the end of this post for evidence of said costumes…

DECOR

One of the entries on my 50 x 50 list that I shared a couple of weeks ago in THIS post, is to actually decorate (and hand out candy) for Halloween. This will most likely be once I move into a different house as my current “neighborhood” is pretty hidden, I don’t have a yard or a lot of outdoor real estate to decorate, and I don’t get much trick-or-treat traffic. TBD if this actually happens in the next 9 years…

Nevertheless, I imagine that when I actually do decorate for Halloween that I will lean more toward fall / dark academia vibes. Something that works in both day and nighttime settings. And nothing TOO cutesy. Not like the cartoon cutouts from my youth…

So, in the spirit of the season, and in preparation for my someday maybe Halloween decorating goal, I thought it would be fun to curate a collection of spooky yet sophisticated ideas for the home.

Most of these ideas are actually for indoor decorating, so they would be great for a Halloween PARTY… which is not on any of my bucket lists, but maybe it should be… for someday.

COSTUMES

And, as promised, the costumes of Halloween’s past (plus my low-key pumpkin and skeleton tops too).

Considering my love of decorating (and for creative costumes), it’s surprising that I haven’t attempted to give my house a little Halloween makeover for this time of year. But decorating for holidays is sometimes exhausting (or rather, taking the decorations down is exhausting) and I’ve definitely let that sway me. I think when the time comes, and when the setting is right, it will be fun to give my home some spooky vibes for the Halloween season.

Do you decorate and/or dress up for Halloween?
