Merry Blogmas Day #2! When I was planning out Blogmas this year, I didn’t fully think this one through because this post would have been much better suited for a month or more ago, not three days before Christmas. Nevertheless, I’m still going to share here today! And you can keep it in the back of your mind for future holiday seasons…
I don’t recall where I first saw or heard about this idea, but I know I’ve come across it on Pinterest from time to time over the years since I first learned of it, and it is this:
- Something they want
- Something they need
- Something to wear
- Something to read
I love this formula as a jumping off point to brainstorm for gift ideas. I also like that it puts a cap on the number of items, particularly if you have a lot of people to buy for, or even if you have just one. If the recipient knows about and reciprocates with this formula, it’s a nice way to set expectations too.
You can double up on some categories, or omit others. Or make substitutions too.
When I use this formula for giving gifts to my mom, I will sometimes substitute consume for read if she’s not in a reading era. Things like music or a gift card, or sometimes both! And wear doesn’t have to be clothes, but can be perfume (another example from my mom).
I know the holiday season is drawing to a close, but this idea can also be used for birthdays or other milestones you like to celebrate.
Do you use this formula or another one when brainstorming gift ideas?
