Monday Musings: Thoughts On Email

Disclaimer: today’s “musing’ will probably be more like a rant.

When I was growing up, email wasn’t a thing. Or not a big thing. Or maybe I was just blissfully unaware. Now I can’t imagine life without it, especially in my day job. And when it works, it works. However, when it doesn’t…

My personal email is filled with marketing emails, most of which I’ll admit I have signed up for. I unsubscribe when it’s a store I’m probably never going to buy from again, and sometimes even ones I frequent frequently. Some just send too many emails, like multiple times a day. One per day is fine, anything more and I’m annoyed.

More annoying than just a lot of marketing emails: SPAM. I have been inundated with so much spam recently, it’s ridiculous. It is quite overwhelming to suddenly have 30 emails in my inbox, and I don’t know how to make it stop. It’s mostly in my email associated with this website, and unfortunately my service provider doesn’t have a filter or blocker for email. So I mark as junk and pray it will end eventually…

And my third and final email gripe: when the spam filter blocks something it shouldn’t!

The scenario: I was getting out of the shower on Friday morning when my Ring doorbell chimes that someone was at my door. This always makes my blood pressure spike. I checked the camera and a dumpster was being dropped between my parking space and my neighbor’s spot. WTF??? Was my first thought. Why didn’t the HOA tell us??? Was my second thought.

You can probably guess where this is going.

I checked my junk email. Obviously I missed something important. And there on Tuesday, amidst actual junk emails that the Comcast filter caught, was an email from the HOA about my unit’s building getting a new roof on Friday. WTF!!!

We were supposed to move our cars (obviously, I didn’t) and clear off our decks (also didn’t do, duh) and here I was unprepared (and still undressed!) and frazzled and mad at my spam filter for not learning yet that an email from the HOA is NOT junk. I was rushing around, getting ready when my doorbell rang (luckily I was dressed by that point) and they said I had to move my car. They had cleared the deck. I got my breakfast and lunch and headed to work early. When my coworkers saw I was in early, I complained to them about why—Happy Friday…

Email is a great convenience when it works. Years ago, we would have gotten a physical letter, either through the mail or hand delivered to our mailboxes. I probably/most likely would have seen it. And would have been prepared. It all ended up being okay. Except the dumpster is still here… it better disappear today.
What are your feelings about email?
