Reflecting on… spring cleaning

I’ve lived in my house for over 11 years now and, honestly, I’m not sure that I’ve ever really done a full deep clean. I know, gross, right? That’s not to say I’ve never cleaned any of these things deeply or otherwise, just not in one epic swoop (and spoiler alert, this definitely was NOT done in one swoop lol).

March

One of my goals this year was to do a deep spring cleaning. Figured it was about time. My plan was to do it all in March. But my list was long and my time was short. Even still, I got quite a bit of my list done, just not all of it. I completed the following:

  • Declutterred and cleaned kitchen
  • Deep cleaned bathroom
  • Cleaned front storm door and welcome mat
  • Wiped down all door knobs inside
  • Washed curtains, vacuumed blinds and cleaned windows upstairs
  • Unexpected task: ironed one set of curtains

April

When I knew I wasn’t going to complete my entire list in March, I decided to extend it into April, and that seemed optimistically doable given what remained on my list. But my dust allergies had other ideas. Namely taking me out for almost the entire month. Brutal. Wear a mask, people! By the end of the month I was feeling up to a couple smallish tasks:

  • Cleaned ceiling fans
  • Vacuumed blinds and cleaned window in living room
  • Cleaned sliding doors, vacuumed track

May

Early on in April I came to terms with the fact that this cleaning was going to extend into May as well. As of this writing, May isn’t quite over yet, but I’m almost done. So far I’ve completed:

  • Cleaned cobwebs, wiped down walls and baseboards downstairs
  • Vacuumed couch
  • Vacuumed and mopped floors downstairs
  • Clean cobwebs, wipe down walls and baseboards upstairs
  • Clean light fixtures throughout
  • Wash throw rugs throughout
Still to do
  • Clean green off of deck – hoping to do this coming weekend when it’s hopefully warm and sunny out
Moving forward I will definitely plan my spring cleaning to span at least the three months of spring, but I’m thinking I’ll do quarterly deep cleans. And better yet, maybe I’ll split the list up over the year so it’s on a rotation rather than just trying to get everything done in the Spring. TBD! Also, just keep an eye on things and when I see the cobwebs forming, clean them sooner than later.

How do you deep clean?
